Pfeiferhorn

Sunday I set out to summit the Rfeiferhorm in Lone Peak Wilderness Area with Christine and Walt. It's a beautiful peak, with a great headwall that you can see in the picture below. Unfortunatly, we were a little off pace and had to head back from the saddle so Christine could get back to her kids, so no summit. It would have been my 3rd time this winter, so I was a little disappointed, but not much. Plus, I was introduced to some primo ski areas on the downhike, so a good day.

Spring Powder Skiing

Wednesday night and Tursday a storm dumped 12 inches of powder on Big and Little Cottonwood, and a foot and a half in the Uintas. So rather than skiing spring corn today, we were skiing spring powder!

REALLY Stupid Stuff

Just got back from a ski mountaineering trip up Red Baldy in Little Cottonwood Canyon. Considering it's only the 2nd tour on these new skies, and I'm not that good, maybe it was stupid, but not too. After all, no cliffs or rockbands involved in the descent, so all in all safe. Calculated risk, unlike what I saw on the way home.

My personal Darwin Award has to go to the family having a picnic. On the way out of the canyon we stoped at the floodgate station to check out some of the falls in the cutes. Hey, we're in the middle of the spring melt, with temps at 90 in the valley and 70 at 10,000 feet, the canyons are a great place to be. BUT, 3 feet from a raging creek and 10 feet upstream from a 15 foot sluicegate drop with a whirpool is not a good place to have a picnic with an 18 month old and a 3 year old. We warned them, not that the advice was heeded.

Triple Traverse

Last weekend I did the Mt. Dromedary Triple Traverse. I've joined the Wasatch Mountain Club and have the good fortune to spend time with and gain experience from some excellent mountaineers, climbers, and skiers.

The Triple Traverse heads up Tanners Gulch to Sunrise, Jepson's Folly, East Twin, and West Twin peaks, back to East Twin, down to Broad's Saddle and out Broad's Fork. It's an incredible climb, although Tanners Gulch was enough to put a little fear in me, as summitpost.org states:

Warning: Do this route only between early May and late June or early July. This is one of the worst avalanche chutes in the country, so don't attempt it in winter.

Luckily our trip was uneventful, but on Tuesday a group following our tracks had a cornice fall out from underneath 2 guys. Luckily they were able to self-arrest.
